This month we will meet on May 12th at 4pm at the Ely Community Center to hear Keith Steva talk about his plans to process electronic waste here in Northern Minnesota. This project will turn e-waste into valuable materials, reduce our need for newly mined materials, and create jobs! “Electronic waste is growing at the rate of 40% per decade, and much of it ends up in landfills or is shipped overseas for processing. This leads to a loss of valuable metals, harm to local economies and increased environmental and health issues.
In MN almost 6 million people each generate about 46 lbs. of e-waste per year. Contained in that waste are 68 critical elements worth over $3 billion. (Yes, $3 BILLION) In 2023 only 23% of that gets recycled. 70% of the heavy metals like the lead and mercury found in landfills come from e-waste. The useful metals in e-waste include copper, nickel, palladium, iron, lead, tin, aluminum, and zinc, among others. Metals are infinitely recyclable. The avoided toxicity and high quality of recycled products makes recycling e-waste a win-win proposition for environmental and human health.”
