Our topic develops the theme we started in January “What can we do locally to mitigate climate problems?”. We are now giving the spotlight to local businesses who have made decisions to use solar energy to save costs and reduce their carbon footprints. Our speakers this month are Dan Houle and Denise Myers from the Lodge of Whispering Pines, and Orlyn Kringstad from Vermilion Village in Tower.
Dan and Denise run a 12-month a year off-grid resort up the Echo Trail. They have a large solar panel installation and batteries which has allowed them to reduce their reliance on a backup diesel generator. They will discuss costs and advantages. They report that some visitors specifically chose to come because of the “green energy” operation.
Orlyn is bringing a different solar technology to his new cabins behind the “Mar-Jo” motel in Tower. This was developed in Norway but is very suitable for our climate. He will be joined by his engineers by zoom from Norway for the technical details.
On a different topic, the Green Team will be meeting at City Hall on Thursday April 16th at 5pm to discuss the next steps Ely needs to make to reach Steps4 and 5 in the GreenStep program. This is in person only.
