Our main event this month will be led by Mike Overend, a climate and environmental activist from Two Harbors. Mike will discuss VIRTUAL POWER PLANTS. This is a way to use our resources more effectively to avoid building and using “peaker” power plants which are usually run on fossil gas. By allowing utilities minor control on our use of AC/heating, on charge/discharge of batteries from EVs or solar installations, utilities can reduce their peak load levels and supply extra power from our existing batteries to meet demand. It’s like having an extra resource when you most need it. Some of us use off-peak electrical energy for heating, that is already a way of controlling electrical loads. If you are itching to learn more this is a good link: https://www.mprnews.org/story/2025/02/12/how-virtual-power-plants-could-help-minnesota-charge-toward-a-clean-energy-future. The MN legislature needs to clear a path for this sensible idea and hearings are ongoing this session.
