Old attitudes die hard….You can’t have it both ways!

February 25, 2013

Editor The Ely Echo Dear Editor:

Old attitudes die hard, as Joe Folio’s letter in the February 23 Echo demonstrates. Ely is rightfully proud of its iron mining history. However, the current effort to romanticize that history ignores much of its dark underside. Ironically, […]

Are we making any progress? Not really! We’re fighting the same battle begun many years ago, as recently as 1990.

The greatest freshwater eco-system in the U.S. is STILL threatened by state policy and mining greed. Heart Warrior was sounding the alarm in 1990.

Even IF

There are many serious and legitimate reasons why environmentalists, resort owners, and local residents are worried about the prospect of multiple copper/nickel mines here. I can’t understand why our elected representatives for the most part just give lip service to our concerns while working to expedite a hasty permitting process.

But, EVEN IF […]

St. Louis County Board rushes past Citizen involvement…if they can. Legal? It shouldn’t be!

Fealty Demanded

Iron Range Politicians demand fealty* from St. Louis County Board regarding a BWCA and Superior Nation Forest land swap to benefit Copper mining in Northeastern Minnesota, all their subterfuge aside.

* (An oath of fealty was a fundamental element of the the feudal system in medieval Europe . It was sworn […]

“It’s a gamble…and we lose!”

Mr. Tom Coombe, Editor,The Ely Echo, Ely, MN

Dear Mr. Coombe: 30 July, 2012

I have just received my copy of the July-August issue of Minnesota Conservation Volunteer magazine (shown here, of the exploration drill rig in Birch Lake) with an editorial and an article by John Myers on metallic sulfide mining in the forests […]

A Wilderness Worth Preserving

Regulators need to protect our valuable water.

The Cracks in the Copper mining Sales Pitch…becoming clearer.

Watch the VIDEO Then comment on what CRACKS you see in the Copper Mining Sales pitch. I have a feeling we’ve just barely scratched the surface here.

The slides that Paul Danicic presented during his presentation to […]

Good people, Great event, “Never Mined” that would be Sulfide Mining of course!

The ducks play a No Sulfide Mining Tune

The North House Folk School in Grand Marais hosted this joyful Solstice Puppet Pagent celebrating Minnesota’s Northland. Families and talented participants of all ages joined to together to entertain and inform us of the value of Nature and the threat to the BWCA and Lake […]

Minnesotans have the ability, the opportunity and the responsibility to tell our legislators and our governor to support jobs and businesses that are compatible with our waters.

Carla Arneson wrote the following article after visiting the site pictured at the left with a few other concerned and outraged (this is for Gov. Dayton and his group who ask “where is the outrage?,” they don’t seem to be able to act on the facts) citizens. Here is a link to the video made […]

Ely – So just what town are we going to be?

This photo is of the Last Wall of Zenith Sibly Savoy Mine’s Dynamite Shack. It reportedly had 2 foot thick walls and a 10″ thick solid oak door that would have hung in the opening in this wall. The mines shared this shack for safe storage of that vital component of their work. This is […]

PolyMet pollution could ruin Indian culture, tourism

It is shameful elected state and federal legislative members seem to be in collusion with PolyMet to create 360 polluting mining jobs. PolyMet’s proposed mining activity definitely endangers Chippewa Indian spiritual culture and wild rice.

Sixty years ago, a scientist for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources showed that if there are more than 10 […]
