Your Guide to Ely, Canoe Country & the BWCAW - Boundary Waters Canoe Area

Crappie

Ely Resorts and Ely Outfitters for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness welcome you to Ely and to ElyMinnesota.com, your virtual gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, the BWCAW.

Ely Resorts and Outfitters cater to all those who enjoy the canoe, fishing, the Boundary Waters and all nature here in the Northland.  And, this is the season for the might crappie. The crappie is small, compared to our walleyes and northern pike, but feisty and very tasty.  This is the time of year when you can still walk on the frozen lakes, at least in the early morning, it may get a little mushy on top by noon, an get to your favorite crappie and sunfish spots.

The spring ice fishing for crappie maybe a little shorter than usual this year since the spring thaw started in earnst a couple of weeks ago.  The streams are mostly open, the snow is nearly completely gone in Ely and we have experienced warmer than usual temperatures.  It is suppose to cool down to more normal temperatures by the end of the week, but it is sunny and warm now.

With the sun and the warmth come the thoughts of spring flowers and gardens.  Betsy has started some of her seeds and is stocking up on the necessary "starter" supplies to be able to "spring" into action at a moments notice.  Have you also noticed how bright and colorful the seed catalogs are that start coming mid winter when everything is white on white?  Ely Farmers Market is also getting ready for a busy season, Tuesday evenings in Whiteside Park. Whey you visit Ely be sure to stop by the park and visit with the local producers of healthy and tasty edibles, from fruits and vegetables, to jams and jellies, and baked goods.  One stop will make you a regular.

If you have been offended by the loud trucks and motorcycles marauding the streets of Ely, please note the early skuttlebutt is that Ely officials have decided to solve that problem for residents and visitors. Please let us know what you think and if the problem has been solved to your satisfaction.

If a science fiction writer were to imagine what the “perfect plant” would look like and how it would grow, protect itself and reproduce, whatever she came up with probably wouldn’t be as good as the real life common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca).

Ely City Council Regular Meeting October 20, 2009

The Ely City Council regular meeting was called to order by Acting Mayor Zupec at 6:00 p.m. on October
20, 2009 at the Ely City Hall.

The BWCA is facing a major turning point in its history and needs level heads and calm minds to determine the proper way to proceed. We are faced with the contentious issue of non-ferrous sulfide mining in or near the lakes and streams of the BWCA.   The EIS was released this week and the countdown for public comment has begun.  It is very important that we let our thoughts be known and get all questions on the table.
