Your Guide to Ely, Canoe Country & the BWCAW – Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness

HepaticaEly Resorts and Ely Outfitters for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness welcome you to Ely and to ElyMinnesota.com, your virtual gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, the BWCAW. Great things are happening in Ely, we may miss Spring this year.  The last threat of frost was just June 4, 2013, we hope.  But, it is well known that a killing frost has occurred every day, at least once in Ely’s history.

This month’s picture is by Norma Malinowski, one of the most active-in-the-field Ely Field Naturalists.  She leads many of field trips to SNAs (Scientific Nature Areas), and places not normally seen by locals or visitors to the area.  If you are interested in some unique hiking, birding, plant observation and nature experiences you might want to keep track of Ely Field Naturalists events.  Contact us for information on how to get on the Ely Field Naturalists’ mailing list.

Did someone say, FISHING?  We’re having a great start to the Minnesota Walleye season.  Reports from Basswood, local lakes, and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness are that EVERYONE is catching nice stringers of Walleyes.  If you come in the next few weeks, we can almost GUARANTEE you WILL catch WALLEYES!  The caveat to our D Darn Double Walleye guarantee is that you have to have a hook on your line, your line in the water, and a little bait on the hook won’t hurt.

While in Ely this spring or summer, you will want to stop in at the Sustainable Ely building on East Sheridan St. to learn how Sulfide Mining proposed for our region will affect you.  Yes! it will.  At a time when much of the world is without water, many States in the U.S. are running out of water, there are uncertainties about water supply in Minneapolis and St. Paul why would anyone in their right mind even think of jeopardizing the largest fresh water watershed in the world.  Stop by Sustainable Ely next to the Ely Steak House and see for yourself what, when, where, and why, also who if you are interested.

While visiting ElyMinnesota.com, spring, summer, winter or fall check out the “Threatened Waters Blog” to learn the facts about the Copper Nickel mining proposed for our wetland and lakes areas. You will learn that despite the odds we are beginning to make progress against the amazingly deep pockets of the multi-national mining interests who seem to have captured the fancy of Minnesota politicians and those, so far, only influenced by the up-side-potential for Copper mining. As people learn of the very significant and certain downside of this type of mining, especially in this great fresh water reservoir and watershed from Canada to Lake Superior…MINDS ARE A CHANGING! Over 50% polled recently are AGAINST Copper Nickel Sulfide Mining. Maybe there is HOPE for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and Lake Superior. We certaily hope so.
